Costs of Living

Monthly expenditures for personal lifestyle vary a lot. For a general overview, it is worth taking a look at the results of the 22. survey of the German National Association for Student Affairs on student living costs (see here).

According to our student body average housing costs amount to about 400-450€ a month in Erlangen if you are living in a shared flat (in German: WG). Single-student apartments start from about 500€ but may be more expensive. In general, rent can be expected to be slightly lower in Nuremberg, a nearby town which is easy to reach from Erlangen by public transport.

Corresponding to the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG), students must currently calculate the following additional living expenses:

  • Food: 200-300 EUR
  • Transport (public transport and/or car): 30 EUR
  • Learning materials (depending on the subject): 50-100 EUR
  • Health insurance, doctors, medicine: 116-170 EUR
  • Local fee for TV/Radio channels: 17,50 EUR

Funding Opportunities within the University

There is a wide range of scholarships available for outstanding students. In addition to requiring applicants to have excellent grades, most scholarship programmes have additional conditions regarding cultural, political, religious, or social involvement. If you have any questions about the application procedure or selection criteria, you can contact the Student Advice and Career Service (IBZ) or speak directly to FAU’s liaison officer for the scholarship organisation you wish to apply to.
